Years ago, the world saw Hayden Panettiere as an absent mother, but in reality she was carrying a battle few knew about: postpartum depression and addiction, right after having her only daughter, Kaya, in 2014. In 2018, she made the decision that would haunt her for the rest of her life. She gave primary custody of the girl to her father, Wladimir Klitschko, who raised her in Europe.

In her memoir, published just months before she died, Panettiere finally shared what she felt that day. She never stopped being her mother: she visited her, called her, clung to every possible minute. She chose the hardest thing to give Kaya what she could not offer her at that time: stability. 💔
