At Laeken Cemetery in Brussels stands the mausoleum of Léonce Evrard and his wife, Louise Flignot. After Louise died in 1916, Léonce had this small temple built in her memory. Inside, a sculpture of a grieving woman extends her hand toward the wall.

The most surprising thing happens every year during the summer solstice. Around June 21, when the Sun reaches a certain position in the sky, its rays pass through an opening at the top of the mausoleum and project a heart of light onto the wall, just above the sculpture’s hand. The phenomenon lasts only a few minutes and attracts visitors who come to witness it.

Léonce died in 1919, just three years after Louise. Although there is no certainty that the heart of light was intentionally designed, over time the phenomenon became one of the cemetery’s best-known symbols and a representation of the eternal love between them.
