Michael J. Fox turned one of the most emotional moments of the Emmy Awards into something much bigger than an award.
The actor received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for decades of work bringing visibility to Parkinson’s and supporting research to find better treatments and, someday, a cure.
During his speech, he recalled that at first he kept his diagnosis secret because he feared it would affect his career and the way the public saw him. He even wondered whether people would keep laughing with him if they knew he was ill.
Over time, he understood that accepting Parkinson’s did not mean surrendering to it. He also thanked colleagues and the public for supporting him while he was still trying to find a way to keep working and facing the disease.
Since then, Michael J. Fox has used a large part of his public life to raise funds, advance research, and stand alongside those going through the same diagnosis.
That’s why his phrase ended up summing up much more than a ceremony: when life gets difficult, he decided to show up, help, and keep finding reasons to make people laugh.
