“Dad, I still can’t believe you’re gone”
This is how the letter Lionel Messi wrote to his father, Jorge, after his death begins. In it, he recalls the last World Cup, those months when Jorge could no longer travel and waited in Argentina for every message after each match. Messi says he reached the final wanting to win it for him, to bring it to him, to show him a new trophy, but his body could not go on any longer.
He thanks him for being a father, friend, and agent all at the same time, and admits that he now has doubts about continuing to play for much longer. He closes by promising him that he will give his own children the education he gave him. There was so little left until the end, he wrote, and he no longer knows how to go on without him.
