“The waves had the same rhythm as the contractions”: the phrase that explains why she chose the sea to give birth 🌊 Josy Peukert, 37, had spent weeks watching the tides at Majagual Beach, in Nicaragua.

She was looking for the exact day, the moment when the Pacific would be calm enough to receive her son. Together with her partner, Benni Cornelius, she packed towels, gauze, a bowl, and even a strainer for the placenta. Everything was ready, except the fear.

When the contractions came, the sea held her in a way she did not expect. “The waves had the same rhythm as the contractions, that gentle flow made me feel really good”, she said afterward. There, without a hospital or anesthesia, Bodhi Amor Ocean Cornelius was born, on February 27, 2022.

They wrapped him in warm towels and she went back into the water to cool off, as if the ocean were also part of the family. At home, without a medical scale, they weighed him with a luggage scale: 7 pounds and 6 ounces. The world was divided between admiration and doubts, but Josy never doubted her decision. 🌊🤍
