In TP Nagar, a neighborhood in Meerut, India, a woman called the police on Monday, February 2, with a statement that brought the entire block to a standstill: her son had fallen into the drain.

Patrol cars, municipal crews, and even JCB excavators arrived within minutes. For nearly three hours, they removed years’ worth of garbage, mud, and debris that no one had touched, searching for a body that was never there. No child was trapped. The woman eventually admitted that she had made the whole thing up because the drain had been clogged for years and none of the neighbors’ complaints had succeeded in getting it cleaned.

Authorities called the report an abuse of emergency services, but the result was plain for everyone to see: the drain ended up completely clean, something that neither complaints nor reports had managed to achieve before. The case divided opinions online between those who saw a mother desperate for safety and those who saw a dangerous misuse of resources that should have been available for real emergencies.
