Half-asleep, Brianne Shipley heard Alexa’s reminder to put in the drops prescribed for a bacterial infection. Feeling around, she picked up nail glue and put it in her eye. “As soon as it hit me, I started screaming”, she told PEOPLE.

Her 17-year-old son woke up, and she asked Siri to call 911. Before going to the hospital, she rinsed her eye at the sink and in the shower; doctors told her that step had been crucial. There, they removed hardened residue and flushed her eye with a Morgan lens for 30 to 45 minutes. Then they sent her home with an ointment.

Shipley said she arrived feeling embarrassed, until a doctor told her these accidents happen more often than she thought. She shared her story on TikTok to warn people how easy it is to mistake small bottles. Now she keeps her medications separate.
