Melissa Dantas Caldeira Fiuza was 18 years old when she knelt before Lucas Caldeira Fiuza, 21, at the altar of a Presbyterian church in Aimorés, Brazil. It was December 21, 2024, and she had just promised, in front of all the guests, that she would always submit to her husband, that she would respect and honor him as “the head of our household”.
No one recorded that moment thinking about what would come next. The video began circulating in January 2025, and it did not end there: nearly two years later, in July 2026, it blew up again on social media, racking up nearly 4 million views and more than 42,000 comments. Criticism came quickly, with people talking about submission and inequality. But there was also a defense from those who see it as nothing more than a religious conviction.
Melissa and Lucas now live together in Barra de São Francisco, Espírito Santo. Neither of them deleted the video. Neither apologized. And that kneeling, which lasted only seconds, continues, nearly two years later, to divide the internet between those who see it as faith and those who see it as a step backward.
