Alexandra Adams achieved a medical milestone in the United Kingdom by earning her degree and becoming, according to People, the country’s first deafblind doctor. Her story drew attention because she explained that the biggest barrier was not her disability, but the discrimination she faced along the way.
Adams, 32, was born with severe hearing and vision loss, but developed tools to communicate and work with patients. She uses adaptive technology, such as a Bluetooth stethoscope connected to her hearing aids, as well as other support devices for her medical practice.
Her interest in medicine began in adolescence, after spending 17 months in the hospital due to complications from surgery. She is now considering specializing in geriatrics or palliative care, always prioritizing her patients’ safety.
