Chantelle Parkin chose to tell her story. According to her testimony, her ex-partner tortured, raped and strangled her with a dog leash in an attack that, judging by the title of the original article, apparently lasted for hours.

In her account, she reached a breaking point: she begged him to hurry up and kill her. She wasn’t asking for mercy. She was asking for the suffering to end. It’s the sentence that sums up the level of terror she says she experienced that night.

Her story was published in the Fabulous section of the British newspaper The Sun, which features first-person accounts. As far as could be verified, there is no public information about whether the perpetrator was arrested, charged or convicted, so what is recounted here reflects the victim’s version.

When someone decides to put into words the darkest thing that happened to them, how many warning signs were overlooked beforehand?
