Fernanda Hernández was on her way to her Medicine class at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez when she saw him.
A skinny brown dog was rummaging through the trash outside a convenience store. He did not seem to be searching for fun, but out of hunger. Fernanda did not have time to stop, but something about that image stayed with her. She finished her classes, bought food for the dog she was already affectionately calling “little baby”, and ran back to the same place.
She did not find him alive. She does not know whether he was hit by a car or someone deliberately hurt him. She only knows that she arrived minutes too late, with the bag of food still in her hand. Through tears, she recorded a message that is no longer just about that dog: it is about spaying and neutering, offering water and food whenever possible, and not looking the other way. Because sometimes the difference between life and death for an animal on the street is simply someone deciding to stop in time.
