Eddimar Hernández Chacón was 7 years old and walking along South Cottage Grove Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. It was 11:54 a.m. on Saturday, October 3.

According to police, an adult woman approached her on the sidewalk and stabbed her several times in the back. The weapon has not been specified. The girl, who came from a Venezuelan family originally from Margarita Island, was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Witnesses restrained the assailant until police arrived. According to reports, she was injured while being restrained, although her injuries were not life-threatening. Police said the alleged attacker and the girl did not know each other. Telemundo Chicago later reported that the woman was charged with murder. No motive has been disclosed so far.

A security camera at a nearby business had captured the girl walking hand in hand with an adult woman minutes earlier. Police have not said who the woman was. Alderman Michelle Harris said Eddimar and her 16-year-old sister had gone to pay a phone bill, and that the woman followed them as they left. Area Two detectives are investigating.

““Don’t let my daughter’s death go unanswered,” her mother, Estefanía Hernández, pleaded.”
