Chetumal, Mexico, July 2011. María del Carmen Arjona, 19, entered the local prison for a conjugal visit with a wheeled suitcase. Nothing out of the ordinary for the security staff. The problem came when it was time to leave.
The suitcase weighed too much. The guards stopped her, opened it, and found what no one expected to find: her husband inside, curled up to fit in the interior. The man had calculated every centimeter. She had calculated every step. What they did not calculate was the weight that gave everything away. 🧳
The woman was arrested on the spot. The case quickly became one of the most talked-about in the Mexican prison system. But it was not the only one: in 2017, in a prison in Venezuela, another woman tried exactly the same thing with the same result. Discovered. The method was not new; neither was the desperation. What is surprising is just how far someone can bend—literally and figuratively—to try to escape. 😶
