Nathalie Ross is 55 years old, Canadian, and some time ago she was snorkeling in the shallow waters of Thompson’s Cove, in Turks and Caicos. She saw a shark about 1.8 meters long and approached it. She wanted a photo.

The animal bit her on the thigh. Then on one hand. Then on the other. One amputation was below the wrist, the other halfway up the forearm. Her husband went into the water and confronted the shark to get her out of there.

She was rushed to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre and then flown to Canada. Authorities closed that stretch of beach for two days. A second of closeness to a wild animal cost her both hands.
