There are oversights… and then there are oversights.

What was supposed to be surgery to treat a tumor ended up turning into a nightmare for Ana Ormeño, a 54-year-old woman from Quillón, in the Ñuble region, Chile. At the beginning of May she underwent surgery at the Herminda Martín Clinical Hospital in Chillán, but shortly afterward she began to suffer intense pain and vomiting.

After several tests, a scan revealed the cause: a 14-centimeter surgical clamp had been left behind inside her body. The object caused an intestinal obstruction and damaged part of her small intestine, so she had to undergo a second emergency surgery in which 50 centimeters of intestine were removed.

Her family reported alleged medical negligence and is evaluating legal action.
