Amanda Karolkiewicz was 39 years old, a teacher in Michigan, and, under the username “MandyK1179”, had been writing for some time in a Reddit forum for victims of infidelity.
There, she described her 47-year-old husband Kristopher as someone with “major red flags” that she chose to ignore. She recounted episodes of physical violence, an affair with an intern at his workplace, and the time she pushed him after discovering an emotional betrayal. “He mentally destroyed me”, she wrote in 2024. Even so, she stayed with him: “I love my children more than I hate my husband right now”.
On July 24, Grand Haven Township police found white smoke coming from the family home by the lake. Inside were the bodies of Amanda and her six children, aged between five and fifteen, some with gunshot wounds. Kristopher took his own life after killing them all. Sheriff Eric DeBoer called it “an indescribable tragedy that we may never fully understand”.
