Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, 38, and the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican national team with 52 goals, spoke about masculinity and feminism. He said that “women are failing, they are eradicating masculinity” and that this is making society hypersensitive. He also urged women not to be afraid to “let themselves be led by a man”.
In another video, he said: “You want a man to provide for you, but to you, cleaning is a patriarchal oppression… interesting”. Although he also acknowledged that men “are failing when it comes to commitment”.
The response came from the very top. President Claudia Sheinbaum described his comments as “very sexist” and said that “he still has a lot to learn”, although she admitted that he is a good soccer player. “I’m a mother, a grandmother, and a homemaker too”, she added. Chivas issued a statement rejecting any stance that reinforces stereotypes that limit people’s freedom and respect.
