Sall Grover, founder of Giggle for Girls, a women-only app that promises a safe space for conversation, blocked transgender user Roxanne Tickle after noticing “masculine facial features” in her profile photo. Outraged by the situation, Tickle took the case to court.
A Sydney court not only dismissed the app’s appeal, but also doubled the compensation for direct discrimination, raising the amount to 14,000 dollars.
In the end, this historic case showed that the app’s facial recognition system turned out to be extremely costly. Filtering by profile photo had never come at such a high price.
