12 years of doing everything right weren’t enough.
Woody and Bear, two senior mixed-breed pug-type dogs, spent more than a decade sleeping in the same beds, recognizing the same footsteps, and waiting for the same affection. One day, without a clear explanation, the family that had raised them surrendered them to the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Fishers, Indiana. Shelter staff said the dogs didn’t understand why their world had disappeared overnight.
The only thing that kept them sane was each other. They cuddled together at the shelter, refusing to be separated, as if they knew that this closeness was the only thing they had left of their former life. Staff made a simple request: whoever adopted them should take them together, without breaking the only bond that had survived their abandonment.
The story went viral, and a family decided to adopt them both. Today, Woody and Bear sleep side by side in beds that no one will take away from them.
