David Sartin Jr. already knew the way to prison. He was 40 years old and had a federal sentence of more than 10 years for five bank robberies in Texas, all carried out with the same trick: an old-man mask.

His supervised release began in May 2025. According to the Justice Department’s criminal complaint, on August 24, 2026, he entered a bank in Largo, Florida, wearing the same old-man mask with a gray beard, an English-style cap, and square glasses. Prosecutors say he approached the counter, demanded money, and asked the tellers not to include dye packs. Before the robbery, he allegedly left his car and switched to a bicycle.

On September 15, according to the indictment, he repeated the robbery in St. Petersburg, his city. Cameras captured a Toyota FJ Cruiser leaving his home before the second robbery and returning afterward. During a search of his home and storage unit, they found the mask, gloves with black paint, and clothing matching what appeared in the videos.

Federal prosecutor Gregory W. Kehoe announced the charges on October 16. Each charge could carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. Sartin is presumed responsible until a court decides otherwise.
