Selena Gomez said that on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast on November 7, 2022, just three days after releasing her documentary My Mind & Me. There, she had shared that she went through “the worst heartbreak imaginable” and that, in time, it turned out to be “the best thing that ever happened to me”.
In the conversation, the singer explained that she never wanted pain to put a kind of armor around her. For her, giving yourself completely to something is the best way to love, even when there is a risk of getting hurt. “I’d rather keep having my heart broken than feel nothing”, she admitted.

At 30, Selena also acknowledged that a breakup played out so publicly forced her to rethink many things. Instead of letting criticism define who she was, she decided to focus on her personal growth and learn to look at her past with gratitude, even for the experiences that hurt her the most.

The artist admitted that she can’t maintain that hope every day, but she refuses to lose it. She still believes in love, healing, and the possibility of change, without allowing suffering to close the door on new experiences.
Jay Shetty highlighted precisely that decision to keep believing in love after suffering. For him, holding on to the ability to open yourself up and act with kindness, even after a painful experience, is “the greatest sign of strength”.
