Michael Clarke Duncan was nearly two meters tall and made a living protecting stars like Will Smith and Jamie Foxx.
Between jobs, he looked for some small role, some opportunity to act. In 1998, that opportunity arrived disguised as coincidence: a shoot for Armageddon where he met Bruce Willis. The friendship was immediate. So strong that when Willis read the script for The Green Mile, he didn’t hesitate for a second; that role belonged to Michael.
He told him to his face: “I read this script and you ARE this guy. I know it”. Then he picked up the phone and called director Frank Darabont: “I just found your John Coffey”. Darabont later acknowledged that the screen test was already astonishing, but it was Michael’s daily performance on set that ultimately convinced everyone.
