Sandra Thijika was a teenager when she lost a leg to an antipersonnel landmine in Angola.

In 1997, Lady Diana visited the orthopedic center where her prosthesis was being prepared and met her during her historic campaign to raise awareness of the consequences of landmines. Sandra became one of the faces of that visit, which made headlines around the world.

Twenty-two years passed. In 2019, Prince Harry traveled to Angola, following in his mother’s footsteps, and met with Sandra. By then, she was a mother of five and told him something especially moving: she had named one of her daughters Diana in memory of that meeting.

More than two decades later, the princess’s gesture was still alive in Sandra’s family.
