Mamoudou Gassama was 22 years old and had no legal papers when he decided he was not going to stand by and watch. It was May 26, 2018, in Paris, and a 4-year-old child was hanging from a balcony, several floors above the panic in the street.

He did not wait for the firefighters. He climbed with his bare hands, balcony by balcony, four floors of concrete and emptiness, until he could grab the little boy and bring him to safety. Someone recorded everything from below, and that video traveled around the world before Gassama came down from the building.

Days later, President Emmanuel Macron received him at the Élysée Palace, gave him a medal, and announced that his immigration status would be regularized. Today, Mamoudou is a firefighter in Paris. A young man without papers became a French citizen by deciding, in seconds, to save a stranger.
