Pham Trung Tri Dung did not walk onto the stage alone. On his shoulders he carried his mother, who only weeks earlier had been battling a serious illness. At Nguyen Tat Thanh University, in Vietnam, every step of that improvised embrace carried the weight of entire years of sacrifice.

Dung grew up among bottles and prescriptions in his mother’s small pharmacy in Go Cong, Dong Thap. But the path was not linear: he served in the army, lost study time, and during the pandemic he saw the fragility of life up close. Then came the hardest part: his father lost his memory and died just one month before Dung defended his thesis, while his mother was battling her own illness.

Between hospitals, night buses to his hometown, and nights writing beside her bed, Dung graduated with honors. On the day of the ceremony, he decided to carry her in his arms to the stage. It was not a gesture for the photo: it was his way of giving back, in a single moment, everything she had given him first.
