Irma Guillén, an 80-year-old woman from Maracaibo, Venezuela, arrived exhausted at the Rio Grande after a long journey in search of reuniting with her family in the United States. With no strength left to continue, she was helped by a young Venezuelan migrant who did not even know her. Even so, he carried her in his arms through the strong current until he brought her to safety.
The image went viral in May 2021. Many claimed that the man was her grandson, but that was not true. He was a stranger who decided to help when it was most needed. After the crossing, Irma received medical attention and days later managed to reunite with her daughter and granddaughter in the United States.
Sometimes, family appears where you least expect it.
