Ruth Llantoy smelled like fish before she smelled like success.
For seven years, she stood in a market in Pucallpa, Peru, selling fish to help her family. No one would have imagined that behind those cold hands and that stained apron was a future lawyer doing the math: how much was left until the next university payment, how much for books, how much to keep from giving up. Each sale was another brick in a dream that only she could see in its entirety.

She had no sponsor to pay for her degree and no shortcut. She had impossible schedules, market dawns, and nights of studying. And above all, she had the certainty that the work she did did not define her by how small it was, but by what she was building with it.

Today, Ruth is already a lawyer. And when people ask her about those seven years among fish, she does not hide them: she is grateful for them. “Never be ashamed of the work you have”, she said, and that phrase is the true title of her story.
