“You’re not on the spectrum, shut up”: Edward Norton is tired of the “romanticization” of autism and of those who use it as an excuse to behave like “idiots” 👀

Edward Norton held nothing back. In a recent conversation on the Armchair Expert podcast, the actor dropped a line that is already making the rounds everywhere: “You’re not on the spectrum. Shut up”.

His target was those who, in his view, use autism as a trendy label to justify rudeness or antisocial behavior. Norton was clear: turning a real diagnosis into a casual personality trait, or selling it as a superpower, makes invisible those who live every day with profound, real developmental challenges.

The interesting thing is that he didn’t stop at the criticism. He also acknowledged that, as a society, we are getting better at identifying patterns of human behavior, and that not every pattern needs to become a pathology. His comment struck a sensitive nerve: the clash between neurodiversity advocacy on social media and the concern of parents and specialists for those facing severe, nonverbal autism, whose support needs risk being pushed into the background by more digestible versions of the spectrum.
