An American YouTuber was arrested in March 2025 and harshly criticized after illegally entering North Sentinel Island, in India, to try to contact one of the world’s most isolated tribes. Mykhailo Polyakov reached the protected territory in a small boat and left a can of Diet Coke and a coconut as an “offering” for the Sentinelese, after being unable to locate them.
The problem is that the tribe has lived completely isolated for thousands of years and has no immunity to many common diseases. Experts and Indigenous organizations warned that even a single contaminated object could cause a tragedy and put the lives of the entire community at risk.
The YouTuber explained that he wanted to greet them and “transport them thousands of years into the future” with the Coca-Cola as a gift. Indian authorities prohibit approaching the island precisely to protect the Sentinelese and avoid conflicts with visitors. In 2018, an American was killed in an attack by this same tribe while trying to reach the island.
