Alexander Zverev was just 4 years old when a doctor gave his mother news that sounded like a life sentence: he had diabetes.
And with it, according to the diagnosis, a “very, very limited” sporting life. Any mother would have taken that warning as an inevitable truth. His didn’t.
She left that office and decided that her son would be wherever he chose to be, whether he played tennis or did anything else, because an illness was not going to write his story for him.
“I want to thank the most important person in my tennis life and in my life in general. When your 4-year-old son is diagnosed with diabetes, and the doctors at the office tell you that life and sport will be very limited for that child, it takes a very, very strong mother to walk out of that office and say: ‘My son will be wherever he wants to be’”.
Years later, having become one of the most important players on tour, Zverev used a microphone to return that gesture. He did not talk about titles or rankings.
He talked about her, the woman who never watches his matches but who, without knowing it, was there for every one. “It takes an incredibly strong woman to do what she did”, he said.
And that sentence contains an entire childhood that could have been different.
