It all started with a noise complaint. Hazel Benson, a 72-year-old woman in Arizona, called the police because her 38-year-old son was playing video games with the volume too high in the home they shared. Officers arrived, spoke with both of them, and explained to her that he also had the legal right to be in the residence.

After that first argument, the son went out for a walk to calm down. But about an hour later, the conflict escalated again inside the house. According to police reports, Benson called 911 and said she had shot her son, although at first she claimed she didn’t know if she had actually hit him.

When police arrived at the home in Mesa, they found the man outside with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to a local hospital and remained in stable condition, so he survived the attack.

Benson herself also said that after the shooting she threw the weapon into a nearby canal. She now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and discharge of a firearm.

The most striking part of the case is precisely that: everything began as a fight over the volume of a video game and ended with a son hospitalized and a mother under arrest. A domestic conflict that completely got out of hand.
