Sometimes loving also means making decisions that hurt. Andrés, a 12-year-old boy in Mexico, did exactly that when he decided to leave his puppy at a shelter to get him away from the abuse he was experiencing at home.

The little dog appeared in a box outside the Xollin shelter, accompanied by a letter and a stuffed animal. In the message, the boy explained: “My name is Andrés and I am 12 years old. My mom and I decided to leave my little dog in your hands, hidden from my dad, because he mistreats him and wants to sell him.”

In the same letter, he shared the detail that broke everyone the most: “One day he kicked him so hard that he hurt his little tail.” The puppy, who was later named René, arrived with a fractured tail and had to receive veterinary care before being considered for adoption.

Along with him, he also left a stuffed animal “so he won’t forget me,” a tiny but devastating phrase. As the days went by, hundreds of people showed interest in adopting him, although what stayed with people the most was the boy’s gesture.

Andrés couldn’t protect him by keeping him, so he did the only thing he had at hand: leaving him somewhere someone could actually take care of him. And maybe that’s why this story hits so hard. Because it wasn’t abandonment, it was a goodbye made out of love.
