The man who spent years playing heroes cannot be saved. A few years ago, Bruce Willis had to step away from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, and later his family confirmed that he was actually facing frontotemporal dementia, a disease that affects communication, behavior, and daily life.

Today, as his family tries to accompany him through this stage, a report emerged that hit his fans hard: those close to him are reportedly considering donating his brain to science after his death, to help better research this disease. That said, so far there is no official announcement from the family confirming it.

The decision would make sense within the way his family has faced all of this. Since they spoke publicly about his diagnosis, they have insisted on one thing: using the attention Bruce still generates to give more visibility to a disease that many people don’t even know about.

And of course, it hurts to think of it that way. Because Bruce Willis was for years that guy who, on screen, seemed capable of surviving everything. Explosions, punches, villains, impossible missions. But this time the fight is different, much quieter and far more unfair.

If that donation finally happens, his story could help others from a different place. No longer with a movie or a heroic scene, but by leaving something behind so science can better understand what today still takes life away from so many families.
