Paul Pogba spoke about the day he eliminated Messi and felt the need to apologize to him:
“I had never apologized to a player or a national team in my life until I apologized to Messi when we eliminated them in the 2018 World Cup. When the match ended, I greeted him and apologized because he didn’t deserve to lose. He lost four finals, retired, and came back carrying Argentina on his own.”
“He doesn’t deserve this, because he’s given so much to soccer and is the best player ever. For Messi to win the World Cup is something very normal and nothing extraordinary. He deserved three World Cups, but circumstances didn’t go his way. He’s a humble player and never admits he’s the best. That’s why he’s the best player, and I respect him a lot,” the Frenchman concluded.
