In August 2019, Clauvino da Silva, identified as one of the leaders of the criminal group Comando Vermelho, tried to escape from a prison in Rio de Janeiro using an elaborate disguise to pose as his 19-year-old daughter.
The man wore a silicone mask, a black wig, and women’s clothing to try to leave the facility during visiting hours. Although he managed to get through part of the prison without being discovered, the guards began to grow suspicious because of his nervous behavior and the way he walked.
After being discovered, officials asked him to remove the disguise in front of security cameras, footage that later went viral around the world. After the failed attempt, he was transferred to a maximum-security unit, where days later he took his own life with a bedsheet.
