The case of Esteban Carpio became one of the most controversial episodes in the U.S. justice system, not only because of the crime he committed but because of what happened after his arrest.

It all unfolded in 2005. While being questioned for the stabbing of an elderly woman, the young man grabbed Detective James Allen’s gun and killed him. He then tried to escape by jumping from a third-story window, though he was captured shortly after.

The biggest controversy, however, wasn’t the failed escape, but his court appearance: he arrived with his face badly bruised and wearing a mask that reminded many of Hannibal Lecter.

Police claimed the injuries resulted from the fall, but his family alleged he had been beaten in retaliation.
