In several coastal areas, sea turtles are still sold as food, even though many species are at risk of extinction. In Papua New Guinea, Arron Culling decided to take action and, together with a colleague, bought two turtles that were going to be slaughtered for about 50 dollars.
Instead of consuming them, they took them to the coast and released them into the sea, returning them to their habitat. The rescue was shared on social media and generated various reactions. According to Culling, this is not the first time he has done this: he has already helped free nearly ten turtles in similar situations.
The case once again highlights the threat this species faces, as thousands of turtles die every year due to legal or accidental capture in fishing nets.
