長年の飼い主が亡くなり、なぜもう自分を待つ家がないのか理解できないまま、彼女はNAWS Humane Societyのケージに入ることになった。老猫を迎え入れたい人はいなかった。訪問者たちは子猫の元気さを求め、14歳の毛むくじゃらの女の子の疲れた目を通り過ぎていった。そして、家ができると思った3回も、彼女は再び失望した。

しかし、彼女の愛らしい性格がついに里親の心を決め、同じ週に家へ行く準備はすべて整っていたが、Rubyの体は待ち続けることに耐えられなかった。彼女は、自分を世話してくれたスタッフとボランティアに囲まれて亡くなり、自分を待っていた日当たりのよい窓を知ることはなかった。誰もが彼女に望んだおとぎ話のような結末ではなかったが、最期の日まで、誰かが自分を選んでくれたことを知って旅立った。
@franflight I’m beyond heartbroken to be delivering this news to you all. Ruby was struggling with kidney disease and was clearly at the last leg of her life. My heart is forever grateful to Ruby’s fosters Shelly and Maria who fought for her well being and who selflessly dedicated so much time to making sure she was comfortable during her last days. Thank you to Kendra, who was going to be adopting Ruby. Thank you Kendra, for being so kind during this entire process. Thank you for being so willing to open your home to a senior animal who truly needed a home. This is the reality of trying to help the senior cats. They are the ones who truly need us to show up for them. Thank you to everyone who shared Ruby’s story as it did lead to finding a wonderful home who was going to welcome her with open arms.
