Felipe Pettinato, 32, was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of negligent arson in the city of Buenos Aires.
The tragic incident occurred on May 16, 2022, in his apartment in Argentina, where his friend, the neurologist Melchor Rodrigo, lost his life. The court determined that the fire was caused by the improper handling of a lighter, although it ruled out any intent to cause harm.
Despite requests from the victim’s family for a harsher sentence, the judge considered that the defendant attempted to find fire extinguishers to put out the flames. The convicted man must now undergo rehabilitation and supervision.
