Maverick Francisco Oyao didn’t know anything about dressmaking before making this dress, but what he did have – and to spare – was love for his sister. Since her parents weren’t in the best economic conditions, he decided to learn to sew to make the girl’s dream come true.
The bond between brothers is one of the strongest that can exist. These are people you spend time with from day 1, you grow up with them and face the different stages of life together as a tightknit family. Let’s say there are always exceptions, this is true, but there’s no relationship with greater complicity than that of two siblings.
That said, sometimes there are people who take their love and support to the limit. We present Maverick Francisco Oyao, a Zamboanga City (Philippines) native, who decided to help his sister, Lu Asey, in the most incredible way: by making her a dress for her school’s winter gala.
It all stemmed from need: the girl wanted to attend the dance formally dressed, but her parents didn’t have the money necessary to buy her a dress. That’s when Maverick, a culture and arts student at a local university, came into the scene and, after raising some money with friends and acquaintances, bought materials to create a personalized design for his beloved sister. It should be noted that Mave is not a fashion designer and learned everything on his own. It took him about a week and a half to finish the dress.
Ultimately, Lu Asey didn’t win the contest for the best ballgown, but she was very celebrated by those present at the event. In addition, she uploaded photos of the dress to social media, where she and Mave received only good comments. They applauded her brother for his innate ability with a needle and thread.
