Steve Hawkins (58) and Wendy Hawkins (52) departed to a better life on December 23, just 12 hours apart, “It has been a very tragic experience,” said one of their children.

If it is painful for a family to lose a loved one, it is a tragedy for any household to lose two of them. This becomes even harder when it happens at times of celebration and festivity such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve

No one would want to go through a time of sadness during this time, but sadly that is the situation that the Hawkins family experienced, after husband and wife Steve Hawkins (58) and Wendy Hawkins (52) passed away on the same day, just before Christmas. Both lost their battle with cancer.

Steve was an Emergency Medical Services worker in Yankton, South Dakota, USA, and failed to recover when his diagnosis worsened after a five-year battle with cancer. The Yankton County Medical Service informed of this on its Facebook account.

“With profound sadness we inform you that Yankton County EMS Administrator Steve Hawkins passed away on Friday, December 23rd, 2022, after battling cancer for nearly five years. He was 58. Steve was hired as our administrator in June 2009. Before coming to Yankton, Steve was a Paramedic in Cody, Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park. He began his Paramedic career in San Diego, California,” the agency recounted.

“In another sad turn of events, Steve’s wife, Wendy Hawkins, also passed away on the same day, Friday, December 23rd, 2022 at age 52 after a short battle with cancer. Wendy was a devoted wife and mother who stayed at home to raise their three children, Brad, Mandi and Trent, who are now in their 20’s. Brad and Trent are still living at home, while Mandi and her fiance live in Iowa,” she added.

The news came as a shock to both Steve’s workplace, where he was much loved, and the community that knew them. As a result, they want to give him the farewell he deserves. “A memorial service will be held in the future, near springtime, but no specific date has been set,” said Yankton County Medical Services.

A colleague of Steve’s, Troy Cowman, said it has been very hard to cope with. “It’s just a shock to the system. Everyone here is working through it (giving them a send-off),” he told Fox 13.

The couple’s children started a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money for their funeral. “My parents both died of cancer on December 23 within 12 hours of each other. This has been a very tragic experience and my family, and I are trying to come up with the funds to pay for two funerals. They were wonderful parents and took very good care of their family and I am trying to take care of them,” says the description.
