Jayme Janelle got her family into the habit of using rags for the bathroom, made from laundry clothes and they are washed separately. She keeps a basket of clean clothes in the bathroom and as soon as someone uses one, it is left in a bag to clean later.

Opting for a greener lifestyle is something that many people have joined lately to take care of the planet. No longer using straws to drink beverages, choosing glass bottles and containers over plastic, using reusable bags… these are just a couple of examples that people have become accustomed to in order to do their bit in the mission to save the environment.

While it seems that everything in life can be replaced by an ecological alternative, there are some cases that can be uncomfortable, thus, not everyone has started to think about finding a substitute. Jayme Janelle dared to go one step further and replace toilet paper with rags.

Together with her seven children, she lives on a farm where plants abound and are completely adapted to an ecological lifestyle in order to take care of the planet, a mission she has taken very seriously after deciding not to use toilet paper in her house, so instead she uses rags made with «family clothes» and other fabrics.

She dared to make this change more than three years ago, and the shortage of toilet paper at the beginning of the pandemic helped her to stick to her decision, as well as the use of bidet in her home.

Through her Youtube channel, the woman has shown her lifestyle as well as tutorials and tips to join the cause.

In addition, this measure has helped her save a little more money and avoid certain expenses. «What a blessing it has been to have to buy only two packs of toilet paper in the last year, and that’s because we keep toilet paper in our house only for our guests,» she said in a video on her channel.

The rags her family uses for bathing are washed once a week, although it can be more times if necessary, especially if the younger children use them frequently. «I have two wet bags per bathroom that we keep filled with toilet paper so that when one is in use, the other can be in the wash,» Jayme detailed on YouTube.

Likewise, she explained that she washes the rags with hot water and then rinses them with cold water separately, though sometimes alongside regular clothes. «If your washing machine doesn’t have a sanitary cycle, then you probably have to do a pre-soak or at least a second rinse,» she told her channel.

She said that stains aren’t often a problem, and that only one of her youngest children left one but she associated it with not knowing how to use the bidet well yet. Likewise, odors don’t hinder the habit either. «We’ve never had a problem with a bad smell in our bathrooms. I’ve had guests actually tell me my house smells good,» she said in the video.

Some users who have bidets have dared to try this alternative and have liked it, while others think about it or reject it.
