“We just want Juno to have space to figure it out for themselves (…) I didn’t want to find out when I was pregnant because I didn’t want to start imposing societal ideals on my baby,” Stephanie said.

In recent years, the Western world has decided to focus much more on human rights, respect, inclusion, and diversity – sexual, racial, and socio-economic.

This has also permeated some families and couples who have decided to leave behind the old, traditional dynamics and renew their more progressive ways of relating to each other.

A few days ago, the case of Sommer and Stephanie, a non-binary couple who reject “gender indoctrination” and want their newborn baby to be able to define himself or herself as he or she grows up, came to light.

According to the Daily Mail, the couple asked the doctor to keep quiet about the gender of Juno, who was born biologically female, so that they could raise her as “gender expansive” and “fluid”.

We just want Juno to have space to figure it out for themselves (…) we asked no one to announce (the sex) because I didn’t know and I didn’t want to find out when I was pregnant because I didn’t want to start imposing societal ideals on my baby,” Stephanie, 37, explained in detail.

Although they are looking forward to Juno being able to define her gender when she is older, the couple admitted it has been a little tricky when faced with questions from close friends or family.

It was impossible because when someone asks and you refuse to tell them, they feel like you are attacking them or being rude,” Stephanie said of everyone else’s questions regarding the baby’s gender.

Juno plays with male and female toys and calls the couple “Pom Pom“, so she doesn’t differentiate between the concept of “daddy” or “mommy”. Stephanie added that they want her to adopt inclusive and neutral language when speaking.

The couple says they aren’t “pressuring” her, as most people think, but want her to live freely. Still, that has brought some problems, for example with childcare centers, whom they have asked to be inclusive and let Juno express her non-binary identity.

Another problem they’ve had is with her relatives, who assume Juno is a girl. They buy Juno all these feminine clothes and call her beautiful,” Sommer said.

Both Sommer and Stephanie are still searching for a nursery that is perfect for Juno’s needs. They recently discovered that there was one very close to their home where they can include her, so she doesn’t have to go through the unpleasant times they both went through.
