An everyday oversight—showering with contact lenses—brought her to the brink of blindness. Nineteen-year-old Grace Jamison was diagnosed with Acanthamoeba keratitis, an infection caused by a common parasite found in untreated water.

The young woman, who was living in the Dominican Republic, shared on TikTok that the shower water contained the amoeba. “The water there is not very clean,” she explained.

Grace described the symptoms as “brutal.” “There’s a lot of pain in the eyes, a lot of headaches… it causes blindness, blurry vision,” she recounted.

Her treatment is intensive: medicated drops every thirty minutes, some containing pool disinfectant. The process will last up to a year, and afterward she will need therapy for the scarring.

“Many people take their sight for granted.” That’s why she decided to share her experience: to warn about the risks of wearing contact lenses in water. “Wash your hands, change the solution, don’t sleep in them,” she insisted.
