Diego, a giant tortoise over 100 years old, helped save his species from extinction in the Galápagos thanks to his insatiable sexual appetite.
In the 1970s there were only 14 specimens of his species left, but thanks to a breeding program started after his return from a zoo in the U.S., around 2,000 tortoises were born. An analysis revealed that Diego was the father of about 40% of the offspring, around 800, making him key to restoring the population on Española Island.
His story became a symbol of conservation and of how a single animal helped prevent the disappearance of an entire species.
