Having the world’s longest beard sounds like an enviable record, but for Hans Staininger, it was a death sentence. 💀

This 16th-century mayor sported a beard nearly six feet long, which he usually kept rolled up in his pocket. However, during a fire in 1567, panic made him run without tucking it away; he stepped on his own hair while heading down the stairs and broke his neck in the fall.

The most incredible part is that, although Hans died, his beard lives on. Before he was buried, it was cut off and is now displayed in an Austrian museum, where it has been chemically preserved for over 450 years as a reminder of a death as absurd as it is legendary. 🧔‍♂️💀
