The industry (because considering all the money it moves, it’s appropriate to call it that way) of social media influencers follows very particular rules. At its core is the balance between showing a life that has little or nothing to do with the reality that most of us have, while also managing not to show excessive luxuries and wonders to seduce us followers into believing that we too can acquire a lifestyle like that if we work hard enough and have a little luck. This is why many social media models put in a lot of effort into getting their hands on some of the most important luxury samples while also thinking of ways to show them appropriately.

This is why the exposure of Oceane El himer, an influencer of French origin, after she was caught «faking» one of her photographs, caused a stir all over social media. The model was showing how a person with her lifestyle traveled: with ample room, big screens and luxury. Basically, she showed the space and comfort that only a first-class ticket on an airplane can offer.

What she didn’t expect was that uploading the photo right away would mean that someone would be able to see it, and, more than that, that that someone would be sitting near her in the economy class of the plane.

This person took a photo of her and uploaded it to Twitter, exposing the influencer. Opinions were divided: some attacked the model for trying to look like she lives a lifestyle that isn’t hers and selling a lie. Others attacked the leaker, saying that there is nothing wrong with traveling in economy and that the girl was just doing her job.

Perhaps what everyone can agree on, is that it isn’t right to try to demonstrate a way of living that is very far from the reality we actually live in. More than that, there is nothing wrong with traveling in economy, just like hundreds of thousands of people who do it every day. Honesty will always perform much better on social networks than anything else.
