For 12 days, between May 14 and 26, a hospital in Cocorite, Trinidad and Tobago, became the place where thousands of people saw the world clearly again.
Many had spent years waiting for cataract surgery they could never afford. Others did not even know their problem had a solution. The Seventh-day Adventist Church, together with the organizations Hands International and Eyes for India, organized a surgical marathon that performed up to 450 procedures per day, using a technique developed specifically to operate at high volume without sacrificing quality.
“By replacing the lens, people regain their sight. Colors become sharper”, explained Dr. Reynold Agard, president of Hands International. In the end, 3,000 people left that hospital seeing clearly after years of darkness, without paying a single dollar for it.
