After the strong criticism over the refereeing and the complaints filed by the Egyptian delegation, FIFA will review the performance of French referee François Letexier, who was in charge of officiating one of the most discussed matches of the 2026 World Cup.
The match was marked by several decisions that sparked debate, especially the goal disallowed for Egypt after a VAR review for a prior foul in the play. The incident triggered a wave of questions among fans and analysts, who debated whether the intervention of the technology was correct.
Added to that were the allegations made by Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan after the match ended, who even made the gesture associated with FIFA’s anti-racism protocol to report an alleged incident that occurred during the game.
According to reports, the Refereeing Commission will analyze the work carried out by Letexier as part of the usual evaluations conducted after each match of the tournament, although in this case the review takes on special relevance due to the enormous uproar generated by the match. This does not mean that there is a sanction or that a refereeing error has been determined, but rather that the referee’s performance will be evaluated within the corresponding process.
