Faten Ben Amar El Azizi was 20 years old and played for Maghreb Atlético Tetuán, a women’s football club in Morocco.

Last Saturday she was not on a pitch: she was in the water, swimming toward Ceuta, trying to cross the border separating her country from Spain.

She did not make it. She drowned amid one of the largest migrant surges ever remembered in that area: according to Spanish authorities, around 60.000 people tried to cross, and 67 deaths have been recorded.

Local Moroccan media report at least 17 deaths on the crossing from Fnideq alone, a figure that no official Moroccan body has yet confirmed.

Her club put it bluntly in the statement confirming her death: Faten was not seeking fame or adventure; she was seeking a chance at life. She died for that.

How many stories like hers remain unnamed at that border?
